It is fall season (aka pumpkin spice season), and homemade pumpkin sauce is calling your name! A delicious sauce that tastes like sweet pumpkin and fall spices? Yes please!

This pumpkin sauce was created for drinks, like this Iced pumpkin spice chai latte. It is also great for drizzling over ice cream, stirring into yogurt or oatmeal, pouring it over your pancakes or waffles, or as a dip for your favorite apples. Yum!
Ingredients
One of the best things about this sauce is that there are only 5 simple ingredients!
- Canned Pumpkin Puree - the only ingredient here is real pumpkin puree; make sure your can does not say pumpkin pie filling, and you should be good to go! If you don't have pumpkin puree, you could also use mashed sweet potatoes without altering the flavor too much.
- Maple Syrup - You could use another type of sweetener if you would like. If you use a granulated type of sugar, such as coconut sugar or brown sugar, you might need to cook your sauce a few minutes longer.
- Pumpkin Spice - you can use store-bought or make your own mix.
- Vanilla - a staple in fall flavors!
- Lemon Juice - This brightens up the sauce perfectly! It also helps the sauce maintain its color.
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
The second best part? This is an incredibly easy recipe!
- Step 1: Add all ingredients to a small pot.
- Step 2: Stir ingredients together and heat on the stove over medium heat for about 2-3 minutes. This step is optional if using maple syrup, but I think it creates a richer flavor.
The main reason that we cook this sauce is to bloom the spices! If you are using a granulated sugar instead of a liquid sweetener, you will want to cook it until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Hint: You can taste your sauce at any time to see if you would like it sweeter or spicier, etc.
Top Tip
If you would like a smoother sauce, you can blend it once cooked.
Storage
To store, let your sauce cool completely. Transfer to a mason jar or an airtight container, and store in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
FAQ
Pumpkin syrup is a simple syrup made with more liquid, more added sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and a smaller amount of pumpkin puree. Pumpkin sauce includes more real pumpkin for a deeper pumpkin flavor. Pumpkin sauce has a creamier texture that is great for lattes. For other types of drinks, pumpkin syrup might be a better choice. My favorite way to use homemade pumpkin spice syrup or pumpkin sauce is in an iced pumpkin spice latte! You can also use it to make pumpkin pancakes. Yum!
Absolutely! If you want to make your own homemade pumpkin puree for this recipe, you can. For the best flavor, you will want to use a pumpkin that is grown for cooking purposes, such as a 'sugar pumpkin' or a 'pie pumpkin.' This would be great to make during pumpkin season to add to all your pumpkin recipes!
You can either roast, steam, or boil your pumpkin and then blend it until it is pureed. Then you can use your fresh pumpkin puree in this recipe just like canned pumpkin!
If you would like a super creamy pumpkin sauce, you can add a can of sweetened condensed coconut milk to the sauce and either lessen the amount of syrup used or omit the maple syrup completely. If you aren't worried about having a dairy-free pumpkin spice sauce, you can use whole milk or regular sweetened condensed milk.
